dobermann club of the cape Aptitude Test
12 and 13 May 2012
The Aptitude test was developed by the Swedish military and tests steadiness of character, hunting drive, sociability, the ability to unwind rapidly after stressful situations etc. At present it is widely used in Scandinavian countries for pet animals too and has been approved by KUSA as a mental testing method.
Although it is a non-mandatory test, the successful animal will receive a title, which will appear on their KUSA Reg. Certificates. It is a useful medium for discovering the mental make-up of one’s breed or pets and can be of great use in any breeding programme.
You can read more about the test here.
The Dobermann Club of the Cape was delighted to host an Aptitude Test weekend on 12 and 13 May 2012 at Groot Fisantekraal farm outside Durbanville; the first one in 6 years hosted by our club.
What a pleasure to have 4 judges and a marshal from the Western Cape. There were also 2 judges from Kwazulu-Natal that were alternating as Test Leaders.
We had the required 16 dogs that were tested over the weekend. Besides Dobermanns, we also had entries from the Cape Bullmastiff Club, the Western Province Boxer Club, the Cape Rottweiler Club and the Western Province Rottweiler Club. We thank them for their support.
There seems to be a real benefit for owners in doing these tests with their dogs. They leave with a much better idea of what their dogs’ abilities are. We hope we can carry on doing these tests for many years to come.
The dogs achieved very good results:
DMA (Dog Mentality Assessment for younger dogs) will either pass or fail.
In APT (Aptitude testing) the dog can achieve between -300 and +300. A minimum of +100 marks will be a pass, provided the‘Steadiness to Gunshot’ test is not failed. If a dog obtains a minimum of +200 marks, a qualification of ‘Aptitude Excellent’ is awarded.
Lagratitude Grand Slam (Mrs S Malherbe), a Bullmastiff male passed DMA.
Tanyati All Fired Up for Stanwix (Mrs JM Verrinder), a Boxer female passed Aptitude with +173.
Sputnix Zenexah (Ms TG Fryer), a Rottweiler female passed DMA.
